Leading – an Inside Job

As WHS practitioners we are leaders. We lead individuals toward a personal understanding of WHS, organisations towards WHS best practice, industries to embrace WHS and finally whole countries toward no injury. Each time someone will listen we lead them to understanding.

One of the key lessons I have learned over the past 25 years as a leader is the importance of the development of my own emotional intelligence and how leading others is an inside job.
What does this mean!?

We humans are mappers. We take the events and happenings in the world ‘out there’ beyond our nervous system and bring them inside via neurological and mental mapping. As we map things from what is happening on the outside to inside our own mind we delete lots of stuff, generalise things and distort things (you may recognise that ‘other’ people do this a lot!).

We communicate on our insides to our self by re-presenting in the theatre of our mind what we have seen, heard and felt out there in the world. We make sense of things with our senses (hearing, sight, feelings) by internally processing information and representing such as movies in our minds.

The interesting thing is as leaders we need to understand that those we are leading are also creating a map of the reality they are experiencing. Can you see that given our map of reality is an inside job and everybody else’s map is an inside job how disagreements might arise?

To develop as a leader a person needs to become aware of the mental maps they have developed that are serving them and equally shine a light on those that are blocking them from showing up as a strong, influential leader.

If you would like to explore your mental maps further and gain insight into how they may be preventing you from being the best leader possible connect with us here at Enhance Solutions. We have a developmental coaching approach that focuses on identifying what is holding you back, what is serving you right now and how to build on this.
